Grandma Etta's Applesauce
This was a staple in my house growing up. I made this recipe as baby food for both of my kids. It is tasty and surprisingly easy!
Equipment
- Food mill
Ingredients
- 4 lb Apples - cored quartered, but not peeled. (in the fall, there are a huge variety of apples available. Use what you like and mix it up by using a variety of types. In the off season, I use Fuji or Gala along with some Macintosh Experiment and find what you like best!)
- ½ cup Sugar optional
- 8 ounces Water
Instructions
- Place all of the ingredients in a dutch oven style pot. Cover and cook over low heat for ~20 minutes until the apples are very soft and appear to fall apart.
- Put the mixture through a food mill like this one, which will skin and strain the apples.
Notes
Be creative!
I have experimented with flavors for the applesauce. Use the same method to boil down some fresh strawberries or mash up a ripe banana and add to the mixture. My mom always added canned cherries.
